Top Ten Essentials for Women Series No 1 - The White Shirt

Welcome to the first in my 10 week series on the Top 10 Essential Items every woman should have in her wardobe.

I have been spending quite a bit of my time lately in personal styling sessions with my fabulous clients as well as running styling workshops for larger groups. One of the most popular topics at my workshops is 'The Top 10 Essential Items for Women'. I also find that time and time again the Top 10 features heavily when I am recommending pieces to my styling clients.

Just to set the scene...

The well curated wardrobe will have three distinct categories of clothing:

- the wardrobe staples (including the Top 10)

- seasonal trend pieces

- investment items

The staples including the top 10 are the pieces in your wardrobe that will take you easily from season to season and year to year. They will mix and match and provide the basis for endless outfit combinations. They can equally be budget purchases or high end indulgences.

To complement your Top 10, you should think about 2-3 seasonal trend pieces to purchase each season. As these don't tend to last more than 2-3 seasons at best, I don't recommend investing heavily. Stores like Zara or Asos are great for runway to retail purchases that don't break the bank.

Finally investment pieces are those items that will be worn for many years to come as they defy fashions ever changing landscape. These are worth raiding the piggy bank for. Think cool leather biker jacket, classic time piece, Gucci Handbag or Winter Coat. Investment pieces can adapt your wardrobe staples for any occasion and should be classic and versatile.

So now that we have that out of the way. Lets talk about No 1 in my Top Ten Series - The White Shirt.

StartFragmentA crisp white button down, a silk shirt or a white t-shirt can be worn with anything and is great for layering. It's classic and can be styled in different ways: buttoned up, unbuttoned, tucked in, half tuck, tied or midriff bared.

Wear it with denim shorts, skinny jeans, culottes, a high- waisted skirt or a pair of cigarette pants. It can take you from the weekend to the office to date night..

It can create a preppy look when layered under a jumper or a more flirtatious vibe when tied in a knot and worn with a full skirt and stilettos.
